Body (be) Beautiful 2011
Body (be) beautiful is a performance which highlights the issues of self-image.
The use of glitter is alluding to self-harm, but at the same time mocking the 'glittery girliness' of the world that pressures women to conform to a certain stereotype. Repetition of action even though the consequence will always be the same is considered a defining action of mental instability. This performance delves into this, fuelled by ideas explored within my dissertation; it plays on the use of self-harm as a tool of artistic expression whilst also conveying the notion of femininity as potentially harmful in itself, which in turn questions the narcissistic tendencies of both artist and audience.
Below are the words I repeat whilst continually dragging the glitter across my arm:
Body be beautiful.
Shave.
Wear make-up.
Straighten hair.
Lose weight.
Tan.
Tone.
Body Beautiful.
